Generating Motivation
to Change Template Instructions
Coach
Your
role as the coach is to guide your
coachee to a specific performance improvement.
The
following questions are known to work well in ensuring that the change is both
positive and real. Use these verbatim. Repeat questions rather than paraphrase.
To establish what is the unwanted behaviour:
If
there was one thing that if you were to change it would have the greatest
impact on your performance at work, what would it be? Unwanted behaviour.
To establish long/medium/short term goals:
Tell
me, what do you want to achieve for yourself in the longer/medium/shorter term?
(Common response, "you mean at work or…?"), Repeat question emphasize
“for yourself”.
To identify values
Each
time: Why is that important for you? (response) What is the purpose of response
for you?
Discover
at least 3 different values from your coachee. Value1, Value2, Value3,
To
generate motivation to change AWAY FROM the unwanted behaviour:
So when
you no longer unwanted behaviour you will be more/have more etc value1, value2,
value3… is that so?
Link
changing the unwanted behaviour to the values, for example:
So,
when you no longer procrastinate you will be more successful, have more time
with your family and be able to earn more money, is that so?
Then promote discovery for What I do want:
As you
do not want this unwanted behaviour, what is that you do want that is not the
unwanted behaviour?
You
may have to repeat and promote discovery for some time to ensure this is in the
positive and something your coachee can move towards.
